Psychocandy

Today I did my first day as a research assistant at the department of Psychology. It is a part time position, which  is perfect since I work full-time at my "real" job - hawking booze to anyone who wants it. It is also a great opportunity to stay a jour with the lovable world of academic psychological studies, and lets not forget that I am actually getting paid to sit at home and enter data and listen The Jesus and Mary Chain.

Mozz and I

After calling the two existing bookstores in Kalmar to see what they are planning for the release of Morrissey's Autobiography, I am at the moment a bit disillusioned.

After I had to spell the name to the book attendants and inform them who Morrissey is, and that he is in fact releasing, probably the most anticipated book of the year this week - it stood clear that Kalmar couldn't care less. After the news broke the other day that Mozz might appear in Gothenburg on Friday to sign his book, I, of course, got really excited and have for days been trying to justify a late week outing to the West Coast to the wife. But considering people will officially start queuing outside the book store today, Wednesday, I feel my chance of having a chat the rock legend is diminishing. So what's left is to buy  the book online only to have no-one to talk to about it, since apparently kids today couldn't care less about real Rock n' Roll.

Morrissey has a lot on his mind.

MBV is for Winners

While sitting in my study, writing informatics-papers to be able to (within months) collect the degree I started working on acquiring over ten years ago, I keep motivating myself by making a list of things I will allow myself to do once the diploma is on the wall. Today I added buying the new My Bloody Valentine album (mentioned in previous entries) to the mental schedule.
A good thing is that I only have three more papers to write before I have the god damn degree. The bad thing is that the list is unrealistically long.

So Far Today...

I have:
  • Conjured up two pages on the relation between Carl Jung and The Picture of Dorian Gray
  • Baked some scones
  • Tried a new pancake recipe
That's pretty much it. It seemed like a lot more as I was doing it. Now I am just preparing for tomorrow's lecture and relaxing to Beat Happening.

Wilson & Work

Listening to The Smile Sessions while trying to get some work done in the office. It is not easy to focus on the job and at the same time uncover Brian Wilson's lost masterpiece.

Wu-Tang Clan

Saw this homemade car decal yesterday while out for lunch. This lead to me trying to explain What Wu-Tang Clan is to a car full of middle aged women, and yes - I quoted their songs.

Monkey Gone to Heaven

I almost forgot to blog about this: Last Friday (11/11/11, Ooooohhh...) The wife and I went to see Pixies, live in concert. It was one of the best gigs I have ever been to. They performed their Doolittle album from start to finish and threw in the rest of their classic songs as well.

Sick Day

Feeling a bit under the weather still, it has been going for about two weeks now. I think that Nikki, Sean and I keep giving the bug to each other in a vicious snot filled circle. At the moment I am in the office listening to The Bluetones while still wearing three layers of clothes.

Player Vs Player

Friday Update:
Sitting in the office, trying to get organised while listening to My Bloody Valentine.
The past couple of days I have been giving a Spotify a chance. It is alright, but not more. I would have to say I prefer Grooveshark. It might be a bit trickier to find what you're looking for on GS, and things mightn't be there from one day to the other (I was really disappointed when my whole catalog of The Brian Jonestown Massacre disappeared overnight) but it is easier to add songs to your play-list while still playing it and there are no commercial break, 30 seconds of Selena Gomez can ruin a whole hour of Primal Scream (Fact!).

Tonight I am hoping to finally get caught up with the recorded last games of the Tri-Nations. Cant go wrong with some Friday Night Rugby.

Born Slippy

Perk of being the last one to leave the office on a Friday afternoon:
I can rock out to Underworld and pretend I am one of the characters in Trainspotting, something that really doesn't go down well with others in the office.

Music for the Mad

I am by my self in the office for a while so I have concocted a play list consisting of:

  • Inspiral Carpets (Pretty much Blur before Blur)

  • Nick Drake (A British Jeff Buckley before Jeff Buckley)

  • The Cure (What any modern piece of crap Emo band aspire to be)

  • The Libertines (The former next-big-thing of British Rock. Pete Doherty really blew that one!)

  • The Stone Roses (The late 80's next-big-thing of Rock! The whole band blew that one.)

Jonas

For some reason I have had My Name Is Jonas with Weezer stuck in my head since I woke up this morning. I am at the moment trying to listen to it at work as loud as possible, my theory is that that should speed up the process of getting it out of there.

Way To Be Original, Liam

I now realise why Beady Eye's debut album sound familiar.

They sound just like The Undertones!

Frappin' it

As part of my strategy to never do what everybody else is doing I am listening to Goldfrapp at work. Not the most rebellious band, I agree, but since it isn't Country, Soft Rock or something from American Idol it is foreign to the majority of my co-workers. Speaking of music - yesterday I really got my hopes up when I thought i heard CHUCK FM (the radio station that is on here 24/7) play The Volecanoes old hit Carnaby Street. But alas, I was gravely mistaken.

Happy Pig

I have been on a wicked bacon kick lately. Since Monday every lunch and dinner have consisted of bacon, usually accompanied by eggs in some form. Today I even had it for breakfast! But it is not any bacon, it is Wal-Mart's own Peppered Bacon. It comes smothered in freshly ground black pepper - delish! It seems to be working though, did over 5K yesterday in less than half an hour. And I just read that The Stone Roses is reuniting. Bring on the Resurrection.

Elderly Fashioned Learning Institute

Have musically moved from Aimee to My Bloody Valentine.

"Why Matt", you might say, "We dare say it feels as if you are on a wicked 90's kick today."

"But yes", I would reply, "yes it does indeed!"

Breakfast

Freshly made coffee and some dodgy looking broccoli.

To go with this I am listening to the best of Aimee Mann, seems to be a surprisingly nice combination.

New Years Eve

Since no one else wanted to work on New Years Eve and I'm just that kind of nice guy, I am alone in the office today. I am currently rocking out to Soundgarden at a really loud volume. I have already gotten my fix for today regarding Nirvana, The Black Angels and The Mountain Goats. I have actually managed to squeese in some work between loading my Ipod and surfing artsy blogs.

Rocking Out, Once More

Alone in the office again.
Todays Playlist:
  • Meat Puppets
  • The Vaselines
  • The Jesus and Mary Chain
  • Nirvana

I need it after being force fed Neil Diamond a couple days ago - still stinging in my musical ears.

Fish out of European Water

Two things I just found out about where i am that are obviously blog worthy:
  • Men here do not wear scarves. The wife just informed me of this the other day, and it made me seriously reassess the looks from dudes I have been getting since I proudly brought out the scarves a couple of weeks ago.
  • You can't get NME here. Jarvis Cocker is on the cover of the new issue, which boasts that "Pulp is back!" I want to read this but since I am in a place where 'foreign' is something to be scared of, and NME's website sucks i guess we will have to do without.
